Computer Training Center for Seniors

For the first time in recent memory the Computer Training Center for Seniors will not be holding Friday Assistance sessions.

The next phase of the renovation construction is displacing the facilities for the tax program (VITA) who will be using our classroom to maintain their service to the community.

The Senior Center is not open April 10, Good Friday.
A holiday

The dates which the Computer Lab will not be available are:
April 3 and April 17

Our volunteers will be back on deck, 9:00 to 11:00 am Friday April 24.
We will then be at our normal operating hours until the next phase of construction is announced. During this time the lab telephone 910-798-6430 will be monitored for as long as the renovation construction allows.

We will be open through to March 30th for tutoring sessions in the lab. Contact us at 910-798-6430 for details and to make arrangements.

Our Classroom

Our Windows 10 Classroom

(Click on photos for a larger view)

Our classroom is located in the Wilmington Senior Resource Center
2222 S College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28403, view map here

We're using recently purchased models of Dell Inspiron computers with Windows 10 installed and Dell 22" Monitors; all the student furniture has been recently replaced.

The 10-student classroom is divided in half, 6 computer stations on the left and 4 on the right; the Instructor station sits in the middle with a ceiling-mounted projector.

As you can see, 2 students share a computer table with a 3rd chair between, this is where our coaches sit. The coaches are an integral part of the class, you can imagine the difficulty of keeping 10 students in sync over 4 days (10 hours) with the material and directions if there was only an Instructor.

Our coaches come from a wide variety of backgrounds, many are former students who maintained an ongoing interest in the use of computers and wished to share their time, others are local seniors who are interested in giving their time by volunteering at the Senior Center with an interest in computers. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in the Senior Center is a very active and integral part of all the services and activities offered there (updated 9/24/2018).

Our Computer Center is open every Friday morning year-round from 9:00 - 11:00 AM for class registrations and for interviewing those interested in being an Instructor or Coach, all are welcome.

Stop in and see us sometime.

Computer Classroom Coaches

The Computer Training Center for Seniors staff is comprised of volunteers from the Senior Center RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) group. These dedicated Seniors give their time and expertise to assist the Senior Community with their technology questions and needs.

We're looking for additional Coaches and Instructors whether or not you've been to our classes; if you have the basic Windows skills you qualify for coaching.

Our classroom is setup with 10 student computers, all with Windows 10; 2 computers are setup on a computer desk and a Coaching position is setup between the two. As directions are given to students to perform tasks by the Instructor, our volunteer Coaches give guidance when necessary.

Many of our Coaches are former students who have enhanced their computer skills over time and then come back to volunteer their time to help others. They find Coaching is not only a no-stress social gathering but a great way to continue enhancing their knowledge and skills.

If you would like to volunteer, stop by the Computer Center any Friday morning between 9 AM - 11 AM and introduce yourself.

It's a rewarding experience!
