Our Computer Training Center computers now have Microsoft Office installed.

We are currently developing a new course using Microsoft Office, Basic Excel Skills, This 3-day, 6-hour class will be introduced shortly, please revisit for the published schedule of dates and times. The only prerequisite is a familiarity with a Windows 10 Computer, it is expected that students taking this course will have little or no prior knowledge of Excel.

Future Excel courses (Intermediate and Advanced) may follow based on interest.

We will send out an email to our mail list when these classes are scheduled, you may want to sign up below if you're not on our mail list.

What Does My Computer Have?

Sometimes you need to know what Windows Operating System you have on your computer or whether it 's a 32- or 64-bit computer. You can use the Windows utility program 'msinfo32' to show you this information.

The following steps should work on all supported Windows computers:

First, locate the Windows Logo key on the bottom row of your keyboard:

Then, press and release it once, the Start menu should open and the keyboard cursor should be in a search field.

Just start typing msinfo32 and watch for a list to show you msinfo32.exe

Click on msinfo32.exe to open that Utility program.

At the very top of the System Summary in the right-hand column is the name of your Operating System (OS Name), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium e.g..

Down the list about 8 lines is the System Type entry that will display either 32 or 64.

You're done.

Our Classroom

Our Windows 10 Classroom

(Click on photos for a larger view)

Our classroom is located in the Wilmington Senior Resource Center, 2222 S College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28403, view map here

We're using recently purchased models of Dell Inspiron computers with Windows 10 installed and Dell 22" Monitors; all the student furniture has been recently replaced.

The 10-student classroom is divided in half, 6 computer stations on the left and 4 on the right; the Instructor station sits in the middle with a ceiling-mounted projector.

As you can see, 2 students share a computer table with a 3rd chair between, this is where our coaches sit. The coaches are an integral part of the class, you can imagine the difficulty of keeping 10 students in sync over 4 days (10 hours) with the material and directions if there was only an Instructor.

Our coaches come from a wide variety of backgrounds, many are former students who maintained an ongoing interest in the use of computers and wished to share their time, others are local seniors who are interested in giving their time by volunteering at the Senior Center with an interest in computers. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in the Senior Center is a very active and integral part of all the services and activities offered there (updated 9/24/2018).

Our Computer Center is open every Friday morning year-round from 9:00 - 11:00 AM for class registrations and for interviewing those interested in being an Instructor or Coach, all are welcome.

Stop in and see us sometime.

Computer Classroom Coaches

The Computer Training Center for Seniors staff is comprised of volunteers from the Senior Center RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) group. These dedicated Seniors give their time and expertise to assist the Senior Community with their technology questions and needs.

We're looking for additional Coaches and Instructors whether or not you've been to our classes; if you have the basic Windows skills you qualify for coaching.

Our classroom is setup with 10 student computers, all with Windows 10; 2 computers are setup on a computer desk and a Coaching position is setup between the two. As directions are given to students to perform tasks by the Instructor, our volunteer Coaches give guidance when necessary.

Many of our Coaches are former students who have enhanced their computer skills over time and then come back to volunteer their time to help others. They find Coaching is not only a no-stress social gathering but a great way to continue enhancing their knowledge and skills.

If you would like to volunteer, stop by the Computer Center any Friday morning between 9 AM - 11 AM and introduce yourself.

It's a rewarding experience!
